Fashion designers design and manage fashion item production, while also often being involved in creating the clothes. They are expected to be in touch with current fashion trends and collaborate with others in the process. Fashion designers typically have a bachelor’s degree in the arts field, commonly art and design or fashion. If they did not attend one in college, many designers are in a fashion program at some point in their life. College degrees in fashion give people experience with different styles and techniques for creating clothing, as well as knowledge on color theory, various textiles, and other useful things that are used when designing. VCU has a department devoted to fashion design and merchandising in their school of the arts. UVA, JMU, and William & Mary are other Virginia colleges that also include programs to earn a degree in the arts. Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology are some of the most nationally recognized programs for the opportunities they provide for fashion designers.
