Artist Statement

My art explores and depicts isolation, friendship, and the interactions between people. I experiment with the balance between how the individual expresses themselves outwardly and how they actually feel internally. My work examines how particular expressions, poses, colors, textures, and backgrounds can convey certain emotions. The viewer should be able to interpret my pieces in their own way; it is meant to be both personal and relatable. By incorporating a sense of ambiguity in the figures, it allows the viewer to project and explicate their own feelings and emotions.

When making my work, I try to base my materials and techniques off the “mood” of my piece. This is often initially determined by the composition and background color I plan to use. The figures are drawn in black pen and ink to create a sense of stiffness and stability. From there, various colored inks and patterned papers are layered on top. Oftentimes, I go back to “finished” pieces and collage more media onto them. The looseness and organic nature of India and watercolor inks contrast with the harsher lines drawn in pen, further expanding on the conflict and balance in the themes of my art.

Recently, I explored the concept of an “inner world” and how someone’s outlook of themselves and life around them differ between each individual. This includes contrasting imagery of cityscapes and using multiple figures to depict changes in mentality. By layering imagery onto clothing and bodies, I emphasize certain visuals and ideas in the pieces. Furthermore, intentional material choice has become more prominent in my work by considering which colors and textures will harmonize best together to convey my messages. I hope my art not only helps the viewer understand their own life, but prompts them to reflect on the experiences of the people around them.
