Shoichi Okumura was born in Beijing in 1989 and raised in Japan, and is now based in Tokyo. He creates silk paintings influenced by the multiple perspectives used in traditional landscape paintings. The main subjects of his work are people with various flowers, plants, foods, and animals.

I really love the angle used in this piece, as well as the color scheme of the piece. I enjoy the flat colors of the paintings, and would love to be able to do something similar with my work. Additionally, I’ve experimented with adding flowers in my work, so I think it would be interesting to take it further similar to this piece, as well as potentially incorporating animals.

I love the vibrancy of this piece and the overall composition. I like how the plants slightly overlap with the figure, which would be an interesting technique to use in my own work.

Education

I was unable to find information on Okumura’s education, and it appears as though his professional artistic career began in 2017 when he was 28. He is largely influenced by Chinese paintings and does not appear to have a record of education for the arts.

Articles

It’s interesting to read about the different aspects of his work and how the various floral elements are continuous throughout his paintings. I’d like to create a better sense of continuity throughout my work, and I may take inspiration from him.

I love the organic shapes used as the bases for Okumura’s recent paintings. At some point, I’d like to try working with something other than rectangular shaped boards, and his work shows how that can be successfully done and contribute to the overall composition of the work.
