"Silent Work," mixed media on paper, 12" x 18"

Dorian Vallejo is a figure artist, working mainly with pen and ink, charcoal, and oil paint. He began his artistic career illustrating book covers as a teenager for the School of Visual Arts in New York. When the field became more focused on computer-generated work, he began to pursue the arts on his own.

Vallejo is inspired by individuation, which is a “process of transformation whereby the personal and collective unconscious are brought into consciousness.” He creates portraiture and figurative works of people, depicting ideas of modern existence and reality.

He makes the majority of his income from commissions, prints, illustration books, online tutorials, and gallery exhibitions.

What stood out to me about Vallejo’s work is his ability to capture movement and emotion. He uses lots of colors and linework to play into his ideas surrounding the unconscious mind and dreamlike scenarios. I love how he layers imagery and his use of movement and emotion in his work.
